Why (not) Family Medicine? is a series of posts from health care thought leaders, both inside and outside of Family Medicine. These will be posted every Friday. The participants were asked to focus on whatever they wanted in response to this question. We are glad that so many of these impressive leaders were willing to participate, and we hope that you enjoy their responses!
Wanda Filer, MD, MBA:
Most of us went to med school to save lives! Family Medicine is the ONLY specialty, with its relationships, continuity, comprehensiveness & first contact that consistently lowers mortality for the community. Family Medicine is the “pluripotential stem cell” career, in very high demand. It is amazing to see all of the opportunities available. We care for everyone, regardless of demographic and socioeconomic status and we treat the whole person, not just a single organ system, age group or gender. We are the largest single specialty and our work is transforming US healthcare to a more equitable, evidence based, cost effective and quality delivering system. Only physicians who want to be THE patient’s physician, caring and advocating for people, communities and change should pursue Family Medicine. Our patients are the most complex, most intellectually rewarding and most amazing! We ARE Strong Medicine for America and we are also a family that cares about each other! I love being a Family Medicine physician!
Wanda Filer, MD, MBA is the current President of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)
