Earlier today (23 October), 8 national groups that represent the interests of Family Medicine unveiled a 3 year media campaign to promote a health care system centered around primary care, and a 5 year strategic plan to transform Family Medicine to better meet the nation’s health care needs (see Dr Magill’s post from last month for more background). While the ideas themselves are not groundbreaking or new, they represent a renewed and concerted effort by the nation’s leading Family Medicine organizations to demonstrate that our specialty is at the center of a well-functioning health care system.
Glen Stream, MD, FAAFP, who chaired the Family Medicine for America’s Health committee that created the Health is Primary campaign, presented the ideas at the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Scientific Assembly. The plan entails continued focus on the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) as a crucial tenet to the health of individuals and populations; advancing technology to provide better care and increased patient engagement in their own care; improving and increasing the nation’s primary care workforce; and adjusting the current payment model from fee-for-service to a more comprehensive payment structure. This will be accomplished through a large media campaign, local presentations to engage patients, providers, employers, community advocates, payers, and policymakers.
